As Wide as The Sky Release and Book Launch

I am REALLY excited about the release of my first national market women's fiction novel, As Wide as the Sky, which will be released on July 31st from Kensington Books. This will also be the first novel I have done under a pen name--Jessica Pack. The reason for the pen name is to differentiate this novel from my other novels, as this one has different content. While I hope many current fans of Josi S. Kilpack novels will also enjoy As Wide As the Sky, I'm hoping to build a new audience too :-) In light of getting the word out about Jessica Pack and As Wide as the Sky, I'm running a contest for five autographed copies. Multiple entries via this link: a Rafflecopter giveaway.

Also:
  • Purchase and Pre-order links as well as the first chapter for As Wide as the Sky are available on my website here: As Wide As the Sky
  • You can follow Jessica Pack's social media networks on FacebookTwitter, and Goodreads.
  • If you are in the Salt Lake area I would LOVE for you to attend the in person launch party:

Book Launch Information

The King's English Book Shop
Tuesday, August 7th, 7:00 PM

1511 South 1500 East
Salt Lake City

There will be a presentation starting at 7:00 as well as refreshments, a prize drawing, and a book signing. Photos will be posted on the Facebook event page during and after the event. (you can join the event via the rafflecopter give away above--might as well, right? :-)  )

Right now the two names I'm writing under are overlapping in regard to how I'm putting the word out, but I'll be separating over time. If you're interested in works like As Wide as the Sky, you'll want to make sure you're following Jessica Pack.

Thank you so much--Happy reading!

What is "Listen To Your Mother?"

I had not heard of this event until a friend suggested I audition. I followed the link and read up on it, then watched some of last year's presentations, all of which are on youtube. I was impressed with the concept and began to work on an audition piece, but I still didn't feel like I fully "got it." A couple of weeks ago we had a rehearsal, where several of the 12 of us who were chosen for this year's show read our pieces to the rest of the presenters. Holy moly! When it came my turn I had to pass in order to get myself together; I was so touched by what I'd heard. I also asked more questions of the woman who heads up the Northern Utah Show in hopes that I could better explain this to people I know. This is what I learned:

A few years ago, Heather Johnson--the founder of the Northern Utah show--was up late with a baby and stumbled upon the youtube videos of Listen To Your Mother, a live show in New York where women and men and even some teens gave a 3-5 minute talk about some aspect of motherhood. Some were from the perspective of the mother herself, some from the perspective of child, or spouse, or even general observations. All of the pieces had been auditioned and chosen for both the message they had, but how well they went with the other presentations. Each person then read their piece before an audience and a camera at a performance the week of Mother's day. The presentations were then put on youtube to benefit anyone who would find them--and Heather Johnson was one of those women. She was so touched by the show she tracked down the founder and asked her if they had ever considered doing the show in other cities, that she would love to help put one together in Utah. At that time, expansion wasn't a priority, but Heather asked that she be remembered so that if LTYM decided to move into other cities, they would come back to her. She was absolutely certain this would happen, but she didn't know when. Just a year or two later the founder called Heather back and Heather began putting together a show for Utah. 2015 is the third year that LTYM has taken place in Northern Utah, and yet most people still have never heard of it. When they do, like me, they don't really understand what it is. So, this is what it is: Twelve presenters celebrating the hardships and beauty of motherhood.

At the rehearsal a couple of weeks ago I was instantly humbled by the experiences of the other women there. I laughed, I cried--and cried--but left that experience with a connection to these women and a sense of validation and purpose in both my involvement with this group but also my role in the lives of my children. The things shared were truly beautiful, but not in the way where I felt diminished or "Not enough" as so easily befalls us mom's who are so critical of ourselves. I didn't feel like it was overly "praising" or overly "Angst driven." It was just . . . truth. And it was beautiful.

When I got home my husband asked me how it was and I fumbled and bumbled in my attempt at explaining it. I didn't make a lot of sense, but I ended with "I want the whole family to go." I have had a lot of opportunities to present things in the past, to teach or talk about personal growth or goal setting or any number of topics. I have never wished my kids were there like I did that night. So, for my mother's day gift this year I will have my children in the audience. Not just to hear what I have to say, but to hear what this collective group of women have to say about moms. The good. The hard. The crushing. The beautiful.

I hope that you will look into this program and see if it isn't something that might speak to your heart. I hope that you will consider attending. Watch past videos, read up on the mission and goals.

Hopefully, you'll mark your calendar so that on Thursday, May 7, 2015, you will be at Thanksgiving Point to share in the experience. Tickets are on sale and only $9.99 each. It is suitable for all ages so bring your mom, your friends, your kids. You won't regret it.

Baked Alaska Events!

For the last 7 years and 12 books, I have done "Opening Night Parties" at local bookstores to celebrate when each book is released. These events are published in the paper, advertised like crazy online, and have included food, drawings, door prizes--the whole nine yards. With the Sadie Hoffmiller series, the title recipe for each book has been served at these events. I had 11 triple layer devil's food cakes complete with chocolate curls on top. I made about 30 pounds of blackberry crumble and hired the local high school's culinary services class to make 16 pumpkin rolls. It's been a labor of love, I have loved it, but, dang, if it hasn't required some manual labor on my part. Not only making the items (other than pumpkin roll which I hired out and tres leches cupcake that was made by Lois Blackburn) but also the shopping for the items, the transport, figuring out how to keep cold things cold and hot things hot. I still have 150 banana split boats in my cupboard because I had to order 300 of them, I once had to beg some lids from my local McDonalds because I'd bought the wrong size in Salt Lake and the RIGHT size happened to come on their McCafe's (I searched half a dozen fast food places and gas stations before I found the right size) and I have leftover napkins for every single book; yellow, red, pink, green, purple, orange, blue--you get the idea. It has been fun, I've had fabulous helpers (my kids, my friends, my sister Cindy) but Baked Alaska posed a bigger problem than I'd faced with the other books.

Ice cream needs to stay frozen. Meringue does not travel well. IF the ice cream melts, the meringue slides right off. IF the transport is too bumpy, the meringue slides off. IF the meringue slides off, it's a mess and it can't just be put back on. I would need a way to store ten to twelve frozen baked Alaskas, but not in my deep freeze because that would be TOO frozen. I would have to transport them without destroying them and then keep them frozen enough to serve, and I couldn't stack them on each other. I spent a great deal of time trying to resolve these issues and make a plan, I even developed a baked Alaska cupcake that seemed easier, and is delicious, but so time consuming to make and difficult to store that it too had to be rejected (though the recipe is in the book, and it's really yummy!). In the end, I could not envision a result with the baked Alaska desserts that didn't end in failure. There were a couple other considerations for me as well:

When we served banana splits for Banana Split's release, a couple came to the event who also happened to work for the Health Department. They informed me that in order to legally serve food at such an event, I needed to have proof of a food handlers permit, and I needed a provisional certificate of some kind from the health department that certified that I was following proper technique when serving this food. There's a rather hefty fine associated with not having followed these protocals, but they didn't turn me in, just gave me a warning for next time.

When Tres Leches Cupcakes came out, the woman who had come up with the title recipe offered to make the cupcakes (she has proper certification). But that wasn't available to me this time around.

The other consideration is that my attendance has gotten lower with each opening night. In the beginning I used to get about 200 people, at the last one I probably had 100. I think in part this is because life is just so busy, I think it also has to do with the fact that I'm doing an opening night every six months and it's kind of lost it's 'punch.' Now, having the opening night has never been about selling as many books as possible, it's more about me having a chance to celebrate the book and I get to visit witht readers I only ever see at opening nights. But, still, with attendance getting smaller and circumstances getting more complicated and Baked Alaska feeling impossible to serve to a crowd, I decided to explore other ideas and I came up with something I hope will be successful.

Instead of doing one signing in my local community and serving the title recipe, I'll do five signings in five different stores across the Wasatch Front and have some yummy treats that are easy to transport. Here's a list of where I'll be and when I'll be there on Saturday, February 16th:

UVillage Deseret Book – 10:00 am-11:00 am
1076 S 750 E
OREM, UT

Fort Union Deseret Book – Noon-1:00 pm
1110 FORT UNION BLVD
MIDVALE, UT

Layton Deseret Book – 2:00 pm-3:00 pm
754 N MAIN
LAYTON, UT

Ogden Temple Deseret Book – 4:00 pm-5:00 pm
339 EAST 2250 SOUTH
OGDEN, UT

Brigham City Seagull Book – 6pm-7:30pm
725 W 1200 SOUTH
BRIGHAM CITY, UT

The first four signings are just 1 hour but I get to finish in Brigham City, which is fitting since they have given me such great support in prior openings. I'm looking forward to the chance to see a lot of fans in one day and since I'm doing less signings throughout the year, I'm hoping people will come out for this one. I'm looking forward to doing something new; changing things up and seeing how it turns out. I'll let you know how it goes :-) or, better yet, come see me and find out for yourself!

I started getting emails yesterday (February 8th) that people were finding Baked Alaska in their local stores. You can also order it online at deseretbook.com or Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com. The ebook versions for Kindle and Nook are on their way and it will be on audio, both MP3 and CD within the next week. I hope you love it. You can also buy it in paperback AND ebook, as a combo.

If you'd like to read the first chapters, go HERE. Recipes will be posted on the 16th.

Thanks for all the great support, the series has continued to grow in popularity and I could not be happier with where I am in my career. I owe that to my readers who have laughed with Sadie, rolled their eyes at Sadie, and, ultimately, cheered her toward victory! I hope you enjoy her latest adventure.

I Swear I'm not Selling Soap!

My apologies to anyone that sells Amway--I'm not against it, per se, but it's not my thing. Was once; and I sucked at it and didn't get the vision of it all even if I did really like the product itself. The whole 'call everyone you know' and 'if you care about them you'll tell them about this product' just wasn't my bag.

As a writer, I'm constantly having to 'sell myself' not on a street corner or anything like that, but I do book signings, I tell people I'm a writer even though I know some of them will make squinty eyes at me. However, one thing I haven't ever done before now is try and schedule presentations.

I give a lot of them, several a month, but I am usually invited. A couple months ago I had a signing in Idaho and asked some of my mailing list people if anyone of them would like me to do a presentation in the area on my way home. I sent the request to 50 people and had two of them respond almost immediately. I ended up with a great presentation in Malad Idaho, a place I likely wouldn't have gone. The lady that set it up did a fabulous job putting it together and we had a great time.

So, with that in mind, when Julie Wright and I were planning our book tour we thought, sweet--we can do presentations! I mean, when will I ever be back in Lake Oswego Oregon again? But we'll be right there and what a fun opportunity for all of us, right. Right?

Apparently wrong.

See, this whole promotion thing is a tricky little beast and while the Idaho presentation came together for me so smoothly, these other ones...not so much. When we call the stake leaders to tell them we're going to be in town they're a little suspicious. They don't seem to believe us when we say we aren't selling books, and when we try and tell them we're great presenters, well, they are even more convinced we are coming to sell books. Maybe this is because they don't have a lot of people come present? Or maybe we waited too long to send out the dates and so it seems like we're trying to sneak in. I don't know, but either way we're selling something they don't seem to want.

Kinda like soap.

It's been rather uncomfortable and although we've managed to line up dozens of book signings, and we have a couple presentations set up, it's looking like most of the cities we'll be hunkering in overnight are a-scared of us. Rather harsh on the old self-esteem, bringing me back to those Amway days...and Xango...and pre-paid Legal...and Malaluca (sp). So, instead of presentations, Julie and I might just have to go to movies, paint each other's toe nails and do Chinese fire drills around our rental car.

Sometimes, it seems, an invitation makes all the difference.

(However, if you assumed that we had them set up, we're still looking for events in Lake Oswego, Sacramento, LA, Mesa, and Thatcher--we would love for you to save us from ourselves!

Summary of April Events

April is chocked (chalked? chucked? chuck? chock? Annette--where is your OED?) full of many great things--Easter, chocolate, spring break, tulips, chocolate. And my calendar is brimming. So, I'm going to lay it all out here and eventually I'll update my web page with it as well. If you're able to make it to any of the events, I'll be thrilled to see you. In fact, I'm going to have a "Blog" treat for anyone that attends an event and says they read about it on my blog :-) ( I realize some of the events are 'closed' to members, but those members are still eligible if they see this blog and there are plenty of other 'public' events that are open to everyone.)

Until April 6--LDSbookcorner is featuring Lemon Tart in their "A chapter a Day" program. What they do is send a chapter a day via e-mail. This allows you to sample a book before you decide whether you want to read the whole thing. This is a great opportunity for me and I'm so dang excited to have had them feature Lemon Tart this week. To sign up, go to www.ldsbookcorner.com enter your email. You will shortly recieve an e-mail that says 'update your profile' which then allows you to choose your preferences. Look for my name (Josi S. Kilpack) and click on it. My name will only be there for a week, but if you sign up you'll recieve all five days of the daily chapters. Anyone can join.

April 4th signings:
I will be doing two signings this Saturday, on in Provo and one in Salt Lake. If you have already bought books you would like for me to sign, just bring them in a purse or a bag so the employees don't think you've picked them up to buy.

12:00-2:00--Deseret Book at University Mall (575 E. University Mall Parkway Orem, UT) I think this is the only signing I've done in Utah County in about six years. Wow. Open to the public.

6:00-8:00--This years Salt Lake location is the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, in the lobby. They always have drawings and food and all kinds of wonderful goodness to make it worth the trip. Open to the public.

I will be there for a discussion/signing on April 23 from 6:00-7:00 (661 W State, Ste A Pleasant Grove, UT). I will have all of my Cedar Fort published books there to sell, but you'll need to buy any of my Deseret Book published books at another location before that night. April 24 & 25--I'll be one of the boot camp instructors on both mornings of the LDStorymakers writers' conference 2009 and I'll teaching a workshop on how to build and take advantage of your own writing community. My workshop is at 9:30 on Saturday morning--I'm up against Carolyn Campbell's article writing and Rachel Anne Nunes Plot and Conflict. Ouch. Hopefully I'll get a seat or two filled though. Registration is still open!

April 29--I've been invited to the "Treats and a Good Book" bookclub for a ward in Tremonton. They chose Lemon Tart as their book for April, and have invited me to sit in on the discussion. I love these things! Closed except to members (and freinds they might invite)

April 30 or May 1--I'll be doing a booksiging at the BYU bookstore sometime during women's conference. This is another fabulopus venue and opportunity, so if you haven't caught up to me by then, look for me then. I'll post the details when I know them. Open to the public.

Oh, and Lemon Tart hit #1 on the fiction/literature list on DB last Friday! It's #10 on DB's overall bestseller list and the 3rd fiction title of those top ten. I owe it to you guys! Thanks so much.

Tower of Strength Contest

Annette Lyon, my good friend, has released book 4 in her temple series--though they aren't sequels--Tower of Strength and she has worked her already-tiny-fanny off to come up with one of the most amazing contests I've ever seen. I like to think I'd support her anyway, but I really want to win stuff too :0) Sooooo, head over to her blog for details--or don't; then I won't have as much competition.

I've never embedded a movie before, so let's hope this works! Don't miss Tower of Strength--I bought my copy last week :-)

Lemon Tart: Time out for Women book March 2009!

To say having a book chosen as a Time Out For Women book club selection is a big deal, is an understatement. Not only are there only a couple dozen books chosen every year, but there are very few fiction titles chosen. Sooooo, when I found out Lemon Tart was chosen, well, let's just say I'd have been embarrassed if anyone had been watching me. Luckily, I was alone and my dignity remained in tact as far as anyone else was concerned, but I felt a little like this:If you haven't heard of Time Out For Women, it's a program designed by Deseret Book that brings women together with recommended books and a traveling women's conference. I attended my first TOFW event in Ogden in January, and it was awesome--very inspiring. I have had other books considered for the bookclub, but not ultimately chosen, so in many ways I feel like I've been working toward this for a few years.

So, here's what's in it for you. If you haven't yet bought Lemon Tart, you can buy it through the TOFW website for 25% off. You can also read my author intereview and read up on the other TOFW book this month "Tell it like it is" by Sheri Dew (yeah, I share the page with HER!) So, anyhow, check it out HERE and tell a freind of two; maybe suggest it for your ward's bookclub next month, since you can get it at a discount during March.

Did I mention this is pretty exciting?

Book Signing TONIGHT!

For books past I have done rather elaborate opening night parties where I have prize drawings, refreshments, door prizes, and other kinds of hoopla. They really are a lot of fun--but they are also rather labor intensive to put together. Lemon Tart was released early, which means I didn't have time for much labor intensive shanagins--and life is crazy enough that I'm actually a bit relieved :-)

BUT, I am having a local book signing tonight and though it won't be as big as others have been in the past, there will be discounts and Lemon Tarts. I cleared my day so that I have nothing else to do but bake and bake and bake today. Honestly, I'm quite looking forward to it. I love to cook and I love this particular recipe and so it's happy smiles all the way around. Here's a look at my kitchen so far:

So, if you are in northern Utah and would like to come to the opening night--I would LOVE to have you. If we don't get a lot of people showing up, you can bet the sisters I visit teach are going to have lemon tarts coming out their ears :-)

Here are the specifics:

Date: Thursday, February 5
Time: 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Place: Reflections of Utah Bookstore
47 So. Main St.
Brigham City, Utah

Potpourri

Did I spell Potpourri right? I don't think I did, it looks really weird, but then again Potpourri is a really weird word anyway, and I don't think it's even English. Surely no one expects me to spell non-english words correctly. Heck I still can't spell "resautaunt" or "buisness" so Potpourri is out of the question.

So, I was on Good Things Utah last week. So fun, so exciting. They asked if I wanted to take my sunglasses off, I'm still trying to figure out why they mentioned it. Do my sunglasses make me look fat? Anyway, the people at GTU were so nice and it was really exciting to be there.

On the set, they have four camera's pointed at you the whole time. To know which camera they are using at any given moment there's a guy that stands behind it. Underneath each camera lens is a small black and white TV screen that shows you what the camera is filming. The hosts are obviously used to this and don't let it distract them, but I kept trying to watch those screens. Really, to give women worried about their sunglasses making them look fat an opportunity to see themselves my not be a wise choice. and the table was too short to comfortably cross my legs, so the wood was cutting into my knee under the table, but for some reason I knew I HAD to cross my legs--don't know why. Anyway, it was lots of fun, and here's the video clip if anyone wants to count how many times I tried to look at the camera or swallowed. Josi on GTU

The day after the GTU show, I came to California to see my sister and her new baby. AND, I drove California freeways to get here! I know! Look at how grown up I am. Granted I do have a navigation system, but I haven't had even one panic attach or hives epidemic. I must be some kind of genius among Utah drivers. So, I'm here and catching up on e-mail and I got the link to an article written by a good friend Alison Palmer. It hit on so many things I've been feeling, have felt all my life in one way or another and it got me reflecting on just how important it is to trust our abilities and trust the Lord. I highly recommend you check it out. I might have it painted on my bedroom wall for all those times I lay in bed and think "What is wrong with me? Why can't I do A, B, C, or D like she does?" It reminds me that Satan will use anything to bring us down, if Crack and infidelity won't do it, he'll use our own attempts to improve ourselves, or the talents we're still trying to grow, to keep us from keeping our feet from moving in the right direction. That's why, like Alison says, we have to keep our vision internal and focused on the Savior. What a great, great, article it was. Here's the link Desert Saints

So, I hope you are all having a wonderful day. I'm off to San Fransisco and later the CHEESCAKE FACTORY--yes, I'm screaming that.

Studio Audience Anyone?

So, I'm going to be on Good Things Utah June 1st. And no, they don't know me very well--what's your point?

So anyway, I've never been on TV before--at least not when my face wasn't blurred out... but no one can prove that was me--and the actual appearance is far enough away that I'm still excited about it. I might throw up for the three days before I go on, but heck, what's a little vomit when I get to be on Good Things Utah!

AND, though I can't tell you all the details (without killing you, and please don't make me do that cause my temple recommend is up for renewal) there might just be a little sumpin sumpin given away to all members of the studio audience that day . . . What? You didn't know Good Things Utah had a studio audience? You're in luck, cause they do! What's that . . . you've always wanted to be in a studio audience? And . . . did I hear you say you'd do ANYTHING to get free stuff?

Well, good thing I've got the info for you (get it, Good Thing...Good Things Utah--ha ha). Who loves ya, baby?

And if you can't make it to the audience, I'll forgive you cause I'm just that kind of girl and you can catch the show on Channel 4 between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m.

Opening Night & Salt Lake Signing

Last week is over...can I hear an Amen! My signings were wonderful--Glory Hallelujah!

A hundred bazillion thank yous to everyone that came out to either the opening night or the Salt Lake signing. I couldn't tell you before how badly I HATE signings, but I HATE them. They are miserable necessary evils that keep me awake at night. So getting to see old friends, new fans, and life long cheerleaders makes it possible for me to do them. Above is a photo from my Opening Night party, to which many people came. Pictured here is Eric Swedin (the killing of Greybird, CFI), Janet Jensen (The Booklover's Cook book, Putnam) and Carole Thayne (Question of Trust and False Pretenses, Covenant) which were a few of the people that came out. Much thanks to Janet who actually had batteries in her camera :-) It's nice to have friends that are prepared.

Anyway, it really was a great week and I so appreciate the wonderful support. I hope those of you that have the book are enjoying it--though I'm totally open to suggestions, really. And thanks again for making my book's debut truly an event!

Happy May (newletter sent to e-mail list)

And thus, it is May. The busiest month of the year for me. Between promotion of Sheep's_Clothing, dance competitions, recitals, spring cleaning, school plays, gardening, weeding, raising a new batch of chicks, community things, and end of school year stuff I'm wondering how December gets such a bad rap. However, we shall prevail!

Anyone on my snail mail list should have received a postcard about my Opening Night party and/or Salt Lake signing. If you live in Cache Valley, it will be delayed a little longer as I figure out a signing I'll be doing up there sometime this month--so look for a postcard next week.

The Opening Night party is going to be awesome, I hope some of you are planning to attend. I have had wonderful door prize donations from Scentiments Lotions, Idle Isle Candies, Lavender House boutique, Pampered Chef, Paradise Pottery and a Book Lover’s gift basket. There will also be yummy treats, and we'll have a Maddox gift certificate drawing for those that purchase the book that night. The event is this Thursday, May 10 5:30-7:30 at Reflections of Utah Bookstore, 47 N. Main in Brigham City Utah.

However, I did plan a Salt Lake signing because so many of you are in Utah or Salt Lake counties and the drive is just so much. It will be Saturday May 12, 2:00-3:30 at the Fort Union Deseret Book.

If none of these signings work for you, the book is also for sale at www.deseretbook.com at 20% off and should be on store shelves beginning this week. As I’ve said before, this book is very different from my others so I’m anxious to hear any feedback you may have. I need to know if this is a direction I should pursue and the only way I know that is to hear it from you guys. Believe me, I can take the constructive criticism, and of course I LOVE the compliments.

Thanks for all the great support, happy reading!
