Oh the Randomness

My kids love the word random, they use it all the time--often when it doesn't make sense for instance "My new art teacher; yeah, totally random" what does that even mean? Maybe Annette can break it down for me.

My husband said the M word the other day--M is for moving at my house. He does this every now and again, and I believe it's mostly a ploy to get me to dig into deep cleaning (it works every time) but it triggers my obsessiveness. The reason for him saying that vulgar word is because there's a chance we could sell the house (for far less than we could have sold a year ago, but still) and use the equity to buy a muuuuuuuch smaller house free and clear. i.e. no house payment. Normal people can consider this and think rationally. Josi grabs onto and refuses to let go of the idea. She's also a romantic, which does not help obsessive things like this. Suddenly, she hates her house, it's too big, it's unappreciated, the yard goes on forever.

But there's a 3 bedroom, one bath, 1300 square foot house, a couple blocks from here for 150K--we could buy it and build an addition out the back and it's a half acre lot and the kids would stay in their same school and we could keep chickens and I'd paint the living room green and my sister would help me make cute shutters and we wouldn't have to worry about irrigation and we would move to a new ward which means I would be released from scouts and my kids would learn what it's like to not have thier own room and they'd learn respect, dang it, and we'd be like Little house on the prarie and we'd sell all our big furniture and we would get rid of TV and my kids would learn to sew their own clothes and we could live on half the amount of money we live off of now and we'd be God's chosen because we would have no debt even though we'd need a storage unit for the food storage.

See how I am?

Who needs commas?

And then, today I decided to do a 5 minute speed cleaning of the kitchen. The philosophy is that I run around clearning like bonkers for 5 minutes and get it all cleaned up. Sounds fun, huh, right. Well, I knocked over the dog treats which went skittering all over the floor and then I picked up the salt shaker by the top that wasn't screwed on tight and the glass and salt went all over the floor. I don't think speed cleaning is a good thing for me.

And my dog got sprayed by a skunk. He already stunk pretty bad but he stinks really really bad now. And I've decided I'm tired of having cats. Is it wrong to take them up to the mountains? I used to think so, but now that the shelters are overflowing I'm not so sure. Isn't it basically being an evironmentalist to encourage natural selection? Plus, they're both fixed so it's not like they'd be adding to the population. One of them peed in my room the other night--that might be part of my problem.

Dinner. Shoot. I don't know what to make.

Having one of those days, are we? I soooo understand, especially on the subject of the M word. I'd like to be doing that - this apartment is getting waayyy too cozy now that it's getting colder outside.

Oh, and don't feel bad - speed cleaning has never worked for me, either. I always take about an hour longer than I would have if I'd just done it normally.

Wowzers! I'm speechless.....ummm...so you finally came to your senses about cats (jk) I'm all about simplifying so I say go for it. We could trade lives for a week, you might like your big house again. Whatever happens, I'm sure you would make a great Caroline Ingalls(ma)!

Oh Josi, I love this. This sounds just like my entire fall has been - so random. My kids say that all the time. "Mom, that's so random." Huh?

I live in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 1200 sq foot house. It's nice in some ways, but in others I don't like it. Another bedroom and bathroom, and it may be almost perfect. I looked at bigger houses (2000-3000), but I'm starting to like the idea of a smaller home. Less mortgage, less cleaning. 1500-1800 may be the perfect size.

On the other hand, we do have an acre, and although we haven't done anything with it, I have TONS of ideas and can probably do most of them to the yard. I love small houses, big yards. Seems like around here it's the opposite... everyone has big houses and tiny yards.

Hahahahaha! This is hilarious! I live in a 2 bedroom, 1100 sq. foot condo and it's just fine right now, but we've only got two kids and no chickens, which helps.

hi, it's me! melissa c said...

I laughed out loud here! Being debt free with no house payment does sound nice but I've heard that for tax reasons, it's better to have a payment. As for moving, that gives me a stomach ache, just thinking about it.

Cats. Ugg. I have three for the sole purpose of killing mice outside. They are not pets and I don't love them. So I am certainly not going to judge you for feeding mountain lions.

As for food storage, I'm all for it! I love to see my little storage room stock full! But you will know the right thing to do. It will either just feel right or will eat at you until you have to do something! lol

Sure love you and good luck with whatever you choose!

PS, my kids started saying "random" too and the only thing I could say in return was, "I don't think you know what that word really means." Because they would use it in a way that made no sense!

I have always loved random :) !!

And I will switch houses with you anytime! Although I dread MOVING ... can't stand it. I have been married for 10 years and we have lived in two places for the entire time.

One of these days I really need to get my hands on a copy of your book.

You are so awesome. Your life is so fun to read about! All of it, from possibly moving(love the Little House dreams...I have those too), to the spilling salt, to the dog getting sprayed.

You want to know the best thing about moving--no pee on the carpets. That's my favorite.

Also I'm totally with you on the randomness of the word random. What's it all about? I haven no idea. However I did find your post a bit random--loved it.

I guess I am the mover and shaker at my house. My husband's by line is "I have a house. I love my house" Notice my is the operative word here. I say to him when the grandkids come if they ever come where are they going to fit. There is a house for sale in my back yard with chicken coop included.

We lived out in the country so people would always drop off their psycho animals and take off. We had our fair share of stray animals wandering around. I remember my dad taking one dog to the shelter, and it was closed so he tied it to the door and left. Wow...he was at his wits end. this dog sniffed up everyones skirts that came, (VT's were traumatized), chewed up his snowmobile seats, shoes...etc. Pets. Evil little things.

That's brave of you to consider downsizing! Yikes. It's funny when I think about the house I grew up in with 8 kids compared to our big houses today. It would be nice to go back to the simpler life...and I would love to live without a house payment.
